Jennifer López quiere hacer del Juneteenth Day “una fiesta nacional” en EEUU

La famosa cantante Jennifer López sumó su voz a la conmemoración del Juneteenth Day, fecha en la que se recuerda el fin de la esclavitud.

La Diva del Bronx publicó en su cuenta oficial de Instagram una foto en la que se aprecia la palabra “Juneteenth”, y junto a ella escribió una petición dirigida a sus millones de fans.

“Tomemos medidas: hay un enlace en mi biografía para firmar una petición creada por Opal Lee, una mujer de 93 años de Texas, para hacer de Juneteenth una fiesta nacional. Si la petición alcanza su objetivo de 500,000 firmas, trabajarán para que la legislación actualice el código 36 de EE. UU., que es la lista de observancias oficiales para agregar Juneteenth”, escribió la cantante.

La razón del pedido a la cual, JLo, suma su voz, es porque todavía la fecha no es declarada como feriado nacional, si no, que solo se celebra de forma estatal.

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or none of these versions could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln's authority over the rebellious states was in question. Whatever the reasons, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.

Posteriormente, la jurada del certamen de baile The World Dance detalló un poco sobre lo que significa este día histórico. “Juneteenth es la conmemoración más antigua celebrada a nivel nacional del fin de la esclavitud en Estados Unidos. Se remonta a 1865 y fue el 19 de junio cuando los soldados de la Unión desembarcaron en Galveston, Texas, con la noticia de que la guerra había terminado, y que los esclavos ahora estaban libres”, publicó.

Ante la muerte del afroamericano George Floyd y las protestas “Black Lives Matter”, la conmemoración de esta fecha ha cobrado mayor fuerza.

Taylor Swift y Tom Hanks se pronuncian a favor del Juneteenth Day

Otras celebridades que se han sumado desde sus redes sociales a la conmemoración del Juneteenth Day han sido Taylor Swift y Tom Hanks.

La cantante resaltó la importancia de esta fecha, mediante la publicación de un video en el que se explica por qué debería celebrarse como un feriado nacional.

Además, señaló que tomó la decisión de darle el 19 de junio a todos sus empleados, y se comprometió a continuar educándose sobre la historia que nos trajo a este momento presente.

“Para mi familia, todo lo que ha sucedido recientemente nos da la oportunidad de reflexionar, escuchar y reprogramar cualquier parte de nuestras vidas que no haya sido ruidosamente y ferozmente antirracista, y de nunca dejar que el privilegio permanezca inactivo cuando podría usarse para defender lo que es correcto”, escribió junto al clip.

I want to thank @the.root and @thedanielleyoung for allowing me to post this video about the significance of today, June 19th, and why it should be celebrated as a National holiday. Personally, I’ve made the decision to give all of my employees June 19th off in honor of Freedom Day from now on, and to continue to educate myself on the history that brought us to this present moment. For my family, everything that has transpired recently gives us an opportunity to reflect, listen, and reprogram any part of our lives that hasn’t been loudly and ferociously anti-racist, and to never let privilege lie dormant when it could be used to stand up for what’s right.

Por su parte, el actor Tom Hanks compartió una imagen de una declaración en la que se puede leer, “Juneteenth. Cuando Estados Unidos se convirtió en una Unión más perfecta… Que todos los hombres son creados iguales”.

Además, junto al post el actor escribió, “Un día para celebrar nacionalmente. Trabajando hacia la libertad y la justicia. Para todos”.
